AKC Group: Miscellaneous Class

The American Kennel Club categorizes their 190 breeds into 8 different groups. As part of our ongoing breed series (Getting to Know Your…), we wanted to take a global look at these classifications and what characteristics separate the dogs into these different groups.

The AKC breed groups are:
  • Herding Group
  • Sporting Group
  • Toy Group
  • Working Group
  • Hound Group
  • Non-Working Group
  • Terrier Group
  • Miscellaneous Group

Today, we look at the Miscellaneous Group.

If you think that name sounds like a catch-all, you’d be right. It is a designation for dog breeds that are making a bid to be recognized by the AKC and are in the process of fulfilling the AKC requirements. This is what the AKC website says about the Miscellaneous Class:

“The breeds currently eligible to participate in the Miscellaneous Class are still enrolled in the AKC Foundation Stock Service®. FSS® enrollment is maintained until the AKC Board of Directors accepts the breed for regular status.”

The AKC Foundation Stock Service is a service offered by the AKC which allows purebred rare breeds to continue to develop while providing them with the security of a reliable and reputable avenue to maintain their records.

The Miscellaneous Class is a steppingstone to full AKC acceptance. Dogs typically participate in the Miscellaneous class for 1-3 years before full acceptance in the AKC Registry. There are several criteria that must be met in order to meet full acceptance:

  1. A demonstrated following and interest (minimum of 100 active household members) in the breed (in the form of a National Breed Club).
  2. A sufficient population in this country (minimum of 300-400 dogs), with a three-generation pedigree. Dogs in that pedigree must all be of the same breed.
  3. Geographic distribution of the dogs and people (located in 20 or more states).
  4. AKC must review and approve the club’s breed standard as well as the club’s constitution and by-laws. Breed observations must be completed by AKC Field Staff.

The following is a list of dogs currently accepted in the Miscellaneous Class:

  1. Barbet
  2. Belgian Laekenois

  4. Dutch Shepherd
