National Pet Week May 5th to 11th, 2019

Do we really need another day/week/month in honor of our pets? I guess so, because this week is National Pet Week. Maybe EVERY week is Pet Week for your pets – I know it seems like it for my pets, so what does National Pet Week really mean?

The Auxiliary to the American Veterinary Medical Association defines this day as:

National Pet Week is sponsored by the Auxiliary to the AVMA to foster responsible pet ownership, recognize the human-animal bond, and increase public awareness of veterinary medicine.

This year’s theme is “Pets & Vets the Perfect Duet” and the teams at AVMA has put together a variety of ways for vets and the pets they love can celebrate. Visit the National Pet Week website here.

The main event held each year is a poster and creative writing contest for next year’s celebration. If you are a pet lover, a teacher, a mom or dad, this is a great opportunity for your kids to get creative and express their love for their pets. Check out the details here.

The AVMA also conducts a survey on pet ownership every five years. We will be reporting on this in an upcoming Blog Post, but some of the more interesting findings include a list of the top pet-owning states. The most recent top pet owning state is Wyoming with 72% of households owning a pet. Wyoming was closely followed by West Virginia (71%) and Nebraska, Vermont and Idaho with 70%.

In keeping with this year’s theme, “Pet’s & Vets the Perfect Duet”, the AVMA has also provides guidelines for finding and “vetting” your local veterinarian to ensure you find the absolute best care for your pet.

How Should You Celebrate?

I’m sure your pet could provide some ideas, mostly around food I would bet. And a little extra treat wouldn’t hurt. But you could also take a step towards ensuring their health by getting an annual checkup with your vet, or maybe a day of pampering at the spa with a bath, a fluff and mani-pedi! OR maybe your rough and tumble fella would rather spend a day at the beach or hiking in the woods.

You usually can’t go wrong with anything since the best gift you can give your pet is time with you.
